Top 5  Reasons To Choose A Career In Welding

Welding is an industry with many different specialities, so different elements might appeal more to different people. With that being said, here are 5 of the top reasons why welding has such wide appeal as a future career option.

1) Job Security

One of the best things about being a welder is that the world will always need more welders. According to the US Labor Statistics Board, the demand for welding jobs should increase by roughly 8% between 2020 and 2030. At current estimates, that equates to over 34,000 new jobs!

Predicting future numbers is always difficult, but one of the reasons why welding has such solid job flexibility is that so many different industries rely on skilled welders. Whether it is construction, transportation, renovation or so many more, major work will almost always require welders.

2)  Entry Jobs Don’t Always Require Long Degrees

Another major benefit to a career in welding is that you can get started without needing to pursue a long-term degree at a university or trade school. [2]

This can be a major benefit to someone just getting started. It gives you the opportunity to test out being a welder and see if you like it. You might also identify a different specialist and choose to pursue a degree or certification in that domain. Unlike many other careers, you may be able to get your foot in the door here and see if welding is for you!

3) Great Expected Salary

According to the US Bureau of Statistics, the median salary for welders was around 45,000$ in 2019. This can be a great salary to get you started in your career.

As mentioned above, one way you can jumpstart your way towards a higher salary would be to specialize in a different industry. The more you increase your skills, the higher your employability will become.

4) Many Different Specialties

Speaking of different specialities, in welding there are many different domains. For example, 4 major types of welding are Gas Metal, Gas Tungsten, Shield Metal Arc, and Flux Corded.

Within these different varieties lies different expertise and interest. You might find that you’re more interested in working with ships, aviation, or just general construction. You might find that you’d rather set up side jobs and contractor work rather than work in a big industry. Once you’ve established your skills, you can take your career as a welder in many different directions!

5) Get Out Of The Office

One benefit of being a welder that appeals to many is that you typically won’t be working in an office setting. While of course there are office jobs or management level positions that require more work calls or boardroom meetings, for the most part, welders will be more hands-on. In a world that is increasingly getting more digital, this free space is something that many prefer as a career path.

As you can see, there are plenty of benefits that come with being a welder. Now that you’ve gotten a head start on some of the most common reasons to pursue a career in welding, the next step will be finding which part of welding interests you the most! When it comes to choosing a career, the more research you can do the better. This will set you up for success in whatever career path you choose!
